Nita grew up in Ingleside, a neighborhood in San Francisco not far from where Kirk Davis lives (from episode 1). We spent nearly three hours together roaming the streets of her childhood. She transported me back into this magical time of kids playing stickball, flying kites up on a grassy hill, and pranking the curmudgeonly neighbor. “Back then family was extended. Everyone knew each other,” she said. “People cared for you. I don’t feel that anymore.”

As I listened to her, I came to feel that Nita was dealing with a loss. This was more than a nostalgic walk she was taking me on. There was something to the place that held spiritual significance. It’s where she came to learn about herself and feel at home in the world. There’s something important about holding on to your home, even if it’s now only a sweet childhood memory.

At the same time, there’s also things that we outgrow. Parts of our conversation touched on her evolving understanding of her faith. The church was the center of her social life growing up. But she’s been feeling the need to question some of the God concepts she learned back then. And then there’s the guilt she feels swirling around about questioning anything at all.
